My brother said my weekly spread looked like a 'color-coded panic attack' and now I can't unsee it.

He pointed at my planner from last Tuesday, which had 7 different highlighters and 4 kinds of washi tape on a single page, and asked if the visual noise was actually helping me focus or just making me more anxious.

My friend's mom said her bullet journal looked like a ransom note, and she just threw the whole thing out.

A ransom note? Your friend's mom must be an expert critic from the font police or something. Throwing out the whole journal feels like overkill when you could just add "we have your cat" in the corner as a joke. Pretty steep price to pay for some messy handwriting, if you ask me.
