Why does nobody talk about how fast grocery rewards add up?

I started using a store loyalty card at Safeway about 3 years ago just to get the sale prices. Last month I checked my account and realized I had $47 in rewards just from buying stuff I was already getting. It really worked for me after I started scanning my phone number every time, even on small trips. Has anyone else gotten a surprise reward balance like that out of nowhere?

I mean, $47 over three years works out to like a buck thirty a month, hardly life-changing money. People act like they found a winning lottery ticket over pocket change.

Honestly the Safeway gas rewards saved me like $30 once and I didn't even notice.
