Vent: my sister's spreadsheet comment made me rethink our whole budget

Tbh I was bragging about our $180 grocery month at Sunday dinner and my sister asked how much we spent on takeout. I got defensive but checked the app later, it was $340. She didn't even say it nasty, just asked if the spreadsheet showed the full picture. Has anyone else had one simple question from family wreck their whole system?

...so what you're telling me is your food budget was really $520, not $180. Look, I get it, the spreadsheet felt great because it only counted what you wanted to count. That's the trick though, those apps and lists are only as honest as the stuff you bother to type in. My sister once asked me if my "eating out" category was a joke because I had pizza listed as groceries. I felt like a total idiot for about a day, then I just put everything in one pile and called it "food" and moved on. Numbers don't care about your feelings, they just sit there and add up. So congrats, your sister did you a favor, now you know the real number and you can actually plan around it.
