Spent $400 on a home energy audit and it showed me where my money was literally flying out the window.

They found a huge air leak in my attic and some old insulation, so I spent another $1500 on sealing and new batts. My heating bill dropped by almost $80 a month, so it paid for itself in under two years. Anyone else had a big upfront cost that actually saved them more in the long run?

Whoa, wait, $400 for an energy audit? That sounds insane to me. I mean, I get that they use thermal cameras and stuff but I could buy a cheap infrared thermometer for like $30 and find the cold spots myself. Maybe it's just me but dropping that kind of cash to be told your attic is drafty feels like a lot. Like, you could've just stood outside on a windy day and felt where the air was coming in, you know? I'm not super handy but even I know insulation is the main thing. Still, I guess if it saved you that much on your bills then it worked out in the end. I just can't get over spending that much just to look at your house.

$400 just to tell you your house is drafty? Couldn't you just feel that with your hand near the window frame?

Yeah because my hand comes with a detailed report and thermal imaging. Guess I'll just trust the goosebumps next time.
