PSA: I found out my bank was charging a $12 monthly 'maintenance fee' I never agreed to
I was looking at my checking account statement online last night, just checking my balance. I saw a line item for 'Monthly Service Fee' for $12. I called them up this morning and they said it's because my direct deposit amount dipped below a thousand dollars last month. I had no clue that was a rule. They waived it when I asked, but now I'm looking at other banks. Has anyone else had a fee pop up out of nowhere like that? What did you do?

My credit union has had the same $1,000 minimum rule for years, so I always check.

But like, is a $1000 minimum even that big a deal now @abbyk10? Most places let you avoid it with direct deposit or something.

My old bank in Ohio had a $500 minimum that felt impossible in college. I got hit with so many fees before I finally switched to a local credit union. It's wild how much those rules can mess you up.
