My sister said my 'fun money' line was way too high for my income
She saw my budget and pointed out I was putting $200 a month towards random stuff while my emergency fund was empty. I cut it to $50 and put the rest in savings. How do you decide what's a fair amount for personal spending?

Yeah, that's a solid move. I did the same thing last year, had like zero savings but was still buying dumb stuff online. Felt way better once I flipped it and paid myself first.

Wait, you had a whole empty emergency fund and still put $200 a month towards random stuff? That's wild to me. I get the fun money idea, but that's putting the cart miles before the horse. Your sister did you a solid. My rule is the emergency fund gets filled first, no question. Fun money comes from what's left after savings, not the other way around.

That "fair amount" idea is tricky. I stopped trying to make it fair and just ask if my bills are paid and my savings is growing. Whatever's left after that is the fair amount, even if it's zero some months.
