Just realized my old truck's AC fix was a $20 part, not a $500 job.
The air in my truck stopped blowing cold last Tuesday. A shop near me quoted $500 for a new compressor. I looked online and found a video for my model. It showed a bad relay switch under the hood. Bought the part for $18 at the auto store. Swapped it in five minutes and the cold air came back. Anyone know other car fixes that are way cheaper than shops say?

Man, I used to just take the shop's word for it. But my old Civic had a power steering leak they wanted a grand to fix. Turns out it was just a cracked hose. A new hose was like thirty bucks and an hour of my time getting my hands dirty.

That idea of learning basic repair hits home. It's not just cars. I see it with simple home fixes, like a leaky faucet or a loose door hinge, where people call a pro for a five minute job. Like simonl86 said, shops often quote big money for small problems. It feels like we've lost the habit of just trying to figure things out first, and it costs us.
