I finally gave up on the envelope system after a year of trying
I used to think cash envelopes were the only way to control my grocery spending, so I'd pull out $400 every month and stuff it in an envelope. After 12 months, I realized I was constantly going over budget because I'd forget the envelope at home or buy things online. Last month I switched to a separate checking account with a debit card just for food, funded with the same $400. It's all tracked in my banking app and I can't overspend. Has anyone else moved from cash to a digital envelope method that actually worked for them?

Oh, have you ever tried just using a prepaid card instead of a whole separate account? I went through the same struggle with cash envelopes, forgetting them at home or losing them in the bottom of my bag. What ended up working for me was loading a prepaid Visa card each month with my grocery money, and I only use that card for food. The digital balance actually felt MORE real to me because I could check it on my phone right at the checkout line, and I stopped caring if I left my wallet at home since the card was always in my car. The key was setting up an automatic transfer from my main account every payday, so I didn't even have to think about it. Yeah, the separate checking account thing you did sounds smart too, I just liked the prepaid card because it was one more step away from my main money.

That's a smart fix for the cash envelope problem. Did you find the separate account made you spend differently, even with the same limit? Like, did seeing a digital balance instead of physical cash make you more or less careful at the checkout?
