A coworker's throwaway comment made me question my whole grocery budget
Last Tuesday in the break room, my coworker Dana mentioned she feeds her family of four on $85 a week. I nearly choked on my coffee. I'm single and I spend about $120, so I asked how she does it. She said she plans every meal around what's on sale at two different stores and never buys anything full price. I always thought that kind of effort was for extreme couponers, but she does it every single week. Now I'm picking up her habit, and my first run at it got me down to $94 for the week. Has anyone else had a simple conversation that totally reframed your spending?
How much of that $94 is stuff you actually wanted versus stuff that was just on sale? I've noticed sale shopping can flip on you if you're not careful, like you end up buying three jars of pasta sauce because they were marked down, and now you've spent more than if you'd just bought the one you needed. It works great when the sale matches your list, but it gets sneaky when the sale becomes the list.
