Why does nobody talk about how long it takes to find cheap flights to smaller airports?

I spent like 3 hours last night trying to book a trip to Portland, Oregon but flying into PDX was way too expensive. I started messing around with Google Flights and found out that flying into Eugene saved me about $80 round trip. The catch is that you gotta figure out the bus or rental car situation from there, which took me another hour of reading forums. Has anyone else found a hidden gem of a tiny airport that was totally worth the extra drive time?

Hah, I once spent four hours chasing a deal to fly into Bellingham instead of Seattle. Figured I'd save like sixty bucks but then the bus from Bellingham to downtown Seattle was another two hours and like twenty dollars. By the time I added everything up I probably broke even and lost a whole afternoon of my life (which honestly felt like I lost the game of adulting). At least Eugene has a decent bus line from what I've heard, so you might have actually won this round.
