Why do hostels always have surprise charges?

I reserved a bed online for a great price. When I arrived, they wanted more money for linens and storage. What's the trick to booking without these hidden fees?

Hostels might be counting on the fact that once you're there, you're less likely to argue over a few extra bucks. I mean, it's like they bait you with the online price knowing most people will just pay up. I always try to message them before booking to ask for a full cost breakdown. Sometimes they'll be upfront if you press them, idk. Otherwise, you end up feeling nickel and dimed at every turn.

Yeah, and it's not just hostels, hotels do it too with those sneaky resort fees. Makes you question every price you see online now. Kinda takes the fun out of planning a trip.

Eh, it's a couple bucks though right? Like if you're already on a trip, is losing sleep over some small fee really worth it? People get so worked up over this stuff lol. I just pay it and move on with my day.
