Unpopular opinion: I think the 'skip the hotel' advice is wrong for some trips
Last week in Chicago, I booked a cheap hostel for three nights to save cash. The first night, a broken pipe flooded the shared bathroom and the noise kept me up until 3 AM. I spent $40 on Ubers just to get to a quiet cafe to work the next day, wiping out my savings. For a short trip where you need to be rested, sometimes the basic hotel room is the real budget move. Has anyone else had a cheap stay backfire and actually cost more?

My friend tried a hostel in Austin last month and the wifi was so bad she had to rent a coworking space for two days, adding $120. @johnh82 is right about hidden costs, but for me it's the lost time and stress that really add up. A bad sleep can ruin a whole day of meetings or sightseeing.

Been there, done that. You start adding up the Uber rides, the coffee shop tabs because the place is too loud to work, and suddenly that cheap bed cost you more than a quiet hotel room. For a work trip or anything under three days, I just book the hotel now. The peace of mind and reliable sleep is worth every penny.

Yeah, and like lilychen said, the lost time is the real killer. I tried the budget route for a weekend conference, and between hunting for a decent signal and just being worn out from noise, I was useless by the afternoon. Now if it's for work, I just bite the bullet on the hotel cost. That quiet room and knowing the wifi will actually work lets me focus on why I'm there in the first place. The cheap spot feels like a deal until you're buying coffee just to sit somewhere quiet, and then you've blown the savings anyway.
