Tried booking a hostel 3 months ahead and it backfired hard
I booked this hostel in Lisbon back in January for an April trip thinking I'd save cash. Ended up paying 15 euros more per night than the walk-in rate because they had a flash sale a week before. Learned I gotta check cancellation policies before locking in early.

Actually 3 months out is still early bird territory for Lisbon hostels in April. I reserved a spot at The Independente last year for June and locked in at 28 euros a night while the walk-in rate was 42 euros a week before. Flash sales are a gamble and they rarely pop up for the better hostels. The difference you saw probably had more to do with that specific hostel's pricing strategy than the timing itself. Plus walking in blind with no reservation means you risk getting stuck at some party hostel with paper thin walls and no sleep.

My buddy reserved a Lisbon spot two months out and that early booking saved him twenty bucks a night.
