Took me 3 trips to realize the $9 hostel breakfast was robbing me blind
I used to grab the hostel breakfast every single morning. It felt like the easy call, roll out of bed, pay the desk, eat and go. Then on a trip to Lisbon in March I actually added it up. Nine bucks a day times six days is $54, and half the time I was just eating toast and a cold egg.
Now I walk to the corner market, get a fresh roll, some cheese, and fruit for about $3, and eat it on a bench. Same food, way better, and I see the neighborhood before the crowds show up. Took me two more trips to stop feeling weird about skipping the front desk.
What is the actual cost of breakfast where you all stay? I want to know if $9 is normal or if I got lazy.
Yes, this is so real. My first hostel breakfast in Dublin was 8 euros for cereal and a hard boiled egg, and I paid it every day like a sucker before I found a bakery two blocks over doing fresh scones for cheap. Corner markets are the move, you eat better and you get to see the city wake up instead of sitting in a basement with a bunch of sleepy strangers.
8 euros for cereal and a sad egg is wild and the worst part is I would've done the exact same thing. I once paid like 6 bucks for a plain bagel at a hostel because I was too lazy to walk ten minutes. Took me three days to notice the little corner shop down the street selling fresh rolls for pocket change. Now I always take a lap around the block before I hand over my money. You live and you learn, mostly the hard way.
