That hostal in Barcelona made me ditch my expensive sleeping bag liner

I spent $60 on a fancy silk liner for hostels, then shared a room with a guy who just used a sheet from the front desk and said it cost him zero extra. He pointed out that most budget places already provide bedding (and lockers for your stuff) so I was basically hauling dead weight. Has anyone else found a piece of gear they lugged around for years that turned out to be totally unnecessary?
