That $25 luggage scale paid for itself on one Spirit flight out of Vegas
I grabbed one of those little digital luggage scales for about $25 at Target two months ago and it ended up being the best travel buy I have done in years. On a Spirit flight out of Vegas last month, my carry on was sitting at 41 pounds when I weighed it in the hotel room, which is over their 40 pound limit for a checked bag, so I moved a few things into my personal item and got it down to 38. Without that scale I would have paid the overweight fee at the counter, which runs about $50 to $100 depending on how far over you are. The thing weighs almost nothing and fits in a side pocket, so it just rides along now. I get that a lot of people just pack light and skip it, but for folks flying the cheap airlines with tight weight rules it feels like an easy win. Has anyone found a rule of thumb for how much wiggle room to leave under the limit, since airport scales can read a little heavy?
Leave yourself a couple pounds of buffer, since those airport scales can be off a bit either way. I weigh my bag at home and just assume it's a pound or two heavier than my scale says, so I aim to land around 38 on mine (which sounds like exactly what you did). Be a little strict on the way out and you won't get surprised at the counter.
