Swapped from booking hotels last minute to using overnight buses in Vietnam 2 years ago
I used to think spending $30 a night on a hostel was cheap until I realized a $10 overnight bus from Hanoi to Da Nang saved me both accommodation and a day of travel, so now I plan my routes around sleeper buses first, anyone else find a transport hack that doubled as a place to sleep?

The real trick nobody talks about is the overnight bus food strategy. I pack a thermos of hot tea and a bag of sticky rice, because the rest stops are a total gamble. One time in Cambodia the driver pulled over at 2am and the only option was fried crickets and warm soda. Sleeper buses are great until you wake up with someone's foot in your face and realize you haven't brushed your teeth in 14 hours.

Oh man, my buddy tried the overnight bus thing in Thailand and ended up on a 16-hour ride where the AC broke and the driver chain-smoked the whole way. He said it was like a rolling sauna with cigarette breaks, and by the time he got off he smelled like an ashtray and hadn't slept at all.

Holy crap, 16 hours? That's a whole different level of brutal. I don't even get how the driver can chain smoke and keep his eyes on the road that long. That's borderline torture, not a bus ride.
