Spent $40 on a local SIM card in Bangkok and it was a total game changer
I got a 30-day tourist SIM from AIS right at the airport, and it gave me unlimited data for maps and ride apps. It saved me from getting lost and paying crazy taxi prices, plus I could find cheap street food spots online. Has anyone found a better deal with a different carrier there?

Seems like basic travel prep, not some huge revelation.

Yeah, I used to roll my eyes at this stuff too. Thought it was common sense. But then I landed in Tokyo at midnight with a dead phone and no way to get the hotel address. The hotel was booked through a third party site and I had no paper confirmation. Had to sit in the airport for three hours waiting for a convenience store to open so I could buy a charger. That was the last time I skipped the basics. I get why people call it simple, but missing one little thing can mess up your whole trip.

Tell you what, it's basic until you forget to do it. Then you're stuck in a new place without an adapter or your bank card gets blocked. Seen it happen too many times. Calling it basic makes people skip it, and that's the mistake. It's simple, but that doesn't mean it's not important. Skipping the simple stuff causes the biggest headaches.
