Seriously, packing your own cooler is the only way to go. Those gas station stops add up crazy fast, like five bucks for a bag of chips and a drink. We grab a cheap styrofoam one and load it with sodas, sandwich stuff, and those big bags of candy from the grocery store. It takes a little planning but saves so much cash for the fun stuff later.

Those styrofoam coolers @hayden_knight36 mentioned only last one trip before they crack and leak. It creates a bunch of trash too. A cheap hard-sided cooler from a discount store is way better, it lasts for years. You can still pack all the same stuff to save money, you just won't have a melted mess in the backseat after two days. It's a small change that works way better for multiple trips.

Why is everyone acting like stopping for snacks is some kind of TRAVESTY? The whole point of a road trip is the EXPERIENCE, not just getting from point A to point B. @simonmoore and everyone in this thread are treating it like a math problem where the only goal is to save a few bucks. I'd rather make a spontaneous stop for some weird local chips or a slushie than have to eat soggy sandwiches from a cooler that smells like old lunchmeat by day three. Plus, you miss out on those little gas station gems like beef jerky shaped like a scorpion or the weirdest flavor of soda you've ever seen. A cooler just turns the trip into a chore, and it saves maybe thirty bucks total.
