My $75 mistake with airport taxis in Bangkok

I landed in Bangkok last month and just grabbed a taxi from the official stand outside arrivals. The driver quoted a fixed price of 1,500 baht (about $45) to my hotel, which I agreed to, tired from the flight. The next day, I used the Grab app for the same trip back to the airport and it cost 350 baht. I checked with my hotel and they confirmed the meter rate should have been under 400 baht. I basically paid almost four times the real price because I didn't check a ride app first. Has anyone else found a good way to avoid this at other airports?

That fixed price is the real trap. The official stand is fine, but you have to insist they use the meter. If they say no, just walk to the next cab in line. It's a known game at the airport. Checking the app gives you a good price reference to argue with, but the meter is the law.
