Just realized hostel location matters way more than I thought

I stayed at a hostel in Berlin for 12 euro a night, but it was a 45 minute bus ride from anything cool. Spent more on transport and time than I would have at a 20 euro place closer to the main sights. The next week I paid 18 euro a night in Prague right near the old town and saved like 3 hours a day walking around. Anyone else have a bad experience trying to save a few bucks on location?

That's actually a totally different angle than what most people think about. I've found that a bad location can also mess with your safety, like getting back late at night in an unfamiliar area with bad street lighting. Did you notice if the cheaper places had worse security or sketchier neighborhoods too?

Friend of mine in Barcelona @johnh82 ended up in a totally dead zone with zero late night food spots.
