Just hit 100 nights in hostels and the real cost is not what you think
I added up all the little locker fees, towel rentals, and overpriced breakfasts I said yes to. In Bangkok alone, those extras were almost $15 a day, which is more than the bed. Anyone else have a hidden fee that wrecked their budget?

Okay but $15 a day in Bangkok? That sounds like you're just saying yes to everything. I stayed at a place on Khao San Road last year that gave you a towel and a basic breakfast for free if you just booked the right dorm. The locker was a coin op but it was like twenty cents. Maybe it's a budgeting thing, not a hidden fee thing. You gotta read the listing details and pack a quick dry towel.

Tbh @fisher.casey, that's still a hidden fee.

My first week in Lisbon, the city tax plus the mandatory "city fee" for a map I didn't want added 35 euros to my stay. It was right there in the small print at booking, but I missed it. Now I screenshot every single "fee" section before I confirm. Those little lines for "tourist tax" or "resort fee" at hostels are the real budget killers, not the locker coins.
