I was super skeptical about couchsurfing until a guy in Madrid let me crash for free and made me paella

He even gave me his spare metro pass for the week, so I saved like $60 on transit alone - has anyone else had a random host go way above and beyond like that?

That guy in Madrid sounds like a legend. I had a host in Berlin who not only let me stay for a week but also insisted I take his bike to get around the city, you know, after he showed me the best spots for cheap currywurst. Then on my last night he made this massive spread of Turkish food because his mom had just mailed him a care package. It was way more than I expected, and I still think about that night sometimes. Funny how those random acts of kindness stick with you longer than any museum visit.

That line about "random acts of kindness stick with you longer than any museum visit" is so true. I had a host in Lisbon who did something similar. She worked at a bakery and would bring home fresh pastries every morning for me. Left them outside my door before I even woke up. Then on my last day she gave me her grandmother's handwritten recipe for pastel de nata. Said I had to make them back home to remember Portugal. I still make those tarts for friends sometimes. It's wild how strangers can care more than some people you've known for years.
