I always booked hostels until a motel in Tucson changed my mind

For years I swore by hostels for cheap solo trips. Then last month I had a 14 hour layover in Tucson and the only hostel was full so I grabbed a $45 motel near the airport. It had a pool, a mini fridge, and zero snorers keeping me up. I actually slept through the night for once. Has anyone else found motels cheaper than hostels in certain cities?

Oh man, totally. Happened to me in a few smaller towns out west. You find these old motor lodges off the main highway for like forty bucks. They're a little worn, but you get your own bathroom, a door that locks, and a TV that gets the ball game. Beats a bunk bed any day.

Nah, I'm sticking with hostels lol. That motel vibe is just depressing to me. I stayed in one in Albuquerque that felt so lonely, like the walls had seen some stuff. Give me a hostel common room any day, even with some snoring. You meet people, get tips, it's part of the trip. A cheap motel just feels like a sad pit stop.
