How I ate 3 meals a day in Rome for $11 total back in 2009 and can't stop thinking about it
I was 23, broke as hell, and staying in a hostel near Termini. I had maybe 40 euros to last me 5 days. This old guy named Paolo who ran the fruit stand by my hostel started giving me the bruised peaches and figs he couldn't sell, just waved me off when I tried to pay. I'd grab a slice of pizza bianca from the bakery next door for 1 euro, eat the fruit for lunch, and hit the same trattoria every night where the owner let me order just a bowl of minestrone for 2 euros if I came after 9pm. Never felt like a charity case either, they just knew I was broke and didn't care. I still think about that soup. Anyway does anyone else have a spot where locals just quietly fed them when they were young and dumb and broke? or was I just lucky
