Hostels used to be my go-to but now I prefer budget hotels
For years I always booked hostels when traveling in Europe. Shared dorms in Paris and Rome saved me about 30 euros a night. That changed after a bad experience in Barcelona last June when my locker was broken into and I lost my passport. Now I look for no-frills private rooms at places like Ibis Budget or B&B Hotels. You get your own bathroom and a lock on the door for maybe 10 to 15 euros more. The peace of mind alone is worth the extra money. Has anyone else switched away from hostels for similar reasons?

Yeah the locker thing is why I stopped too. Had mine cracked open in a Budapest hostel and lost my phone and cash. Ibis Budget is solid for the price, I stay at those a lot now. You get your own keycard and no weirdo roommates to worry about.
