Hostels are not actually cheaper than hotels in most European cities
I kept reading online that hostels are the budget way to go for solo travel. But after 3 trips to Berlin, Prague, and Budapest last summer, I actually ran the numbers. A private room in a decent hostel was $65-$85 a night. I found budget hotels 10-15 minutes outside the center for $50-$70 with my own bathroom and no bunk beds. Plus no one snoring. Has anyone else found this or did I just pick bad hostels?

Are you really out here doing a cost benefit analysis on hostel snoring vs hotel bathroom privacy? It's not that deep, you can just not stay in hostels and save yourself the math.

It reminds me of this one time I was at a hostel in Portland and this guy snored so loud I could hear him through my earplugs. I ended up sleeping in the common room on a couch, which was fine until someone came in at 3 AM to make toast. So yeah, I guess @blair_davis has a point, but sometimes the math is worth it if you're broke and the hotel is $200 more a night.
