Hostel roommate in Lisbon said my $2 breakfast was a scam, but I think he was wrong
Last month in Lisbon I stayed at a hostel where the free breakfast was just bread and jam, so I walked to a tiny cafe around the corner and got a coffee and a pastel de nata for 2 euros. My dorm mate from Australia kept saying that was a waste because "free is free" and he ate the hostel bread for 6 mornings straight. I argued that 2 euros for a real coffee and a warm pastry is the best deal in town, and he said I was just throwing money away. Now I'm torn: is it smarter to stick to the free stuff no matter how sad, or to spend small amounts on things that actually make the trip? How do you all decide when a tiny splurge is worth it?
