Hostel kitchens are actually goldmines if you time it right

I stayed at a place in Lisbon last month and noticed most people cook dinner around 7 PM. So I started using the kitchen at 5:30 instead and had the whole stove to myself. Made pasta with fresh sardines from the market down the street for like 2 euros total. Learned that hostel kitchens get packed at predictable times so shifting my schedule saved me 30 minutes of waiting each night. Did I just get lucky with that hostel or do other places have the same dinner rush pattern too?

One time in Berlin I found the 4 PM slot was dead empty just like @faithg26 said.

I stayed at a place in Barcelona last year and noticed the exact same thing. The kitchen was a zoo from 7 to 8:30 every night, but I started going down at 5 and had the whole place to myself. I made a big pot of chickpea stew with tomatoes and garlic for almost nothing, and the best part was not having to hover over someone's shoulder waiting for a burner to open up. It really is just about figuring out the rhythm of the hostel, and once you do, it makes a huge difference.
