Got hit with a $50 cleaning fee in Barcelona for using a hostel towel

I was at the Sungate One hostel in Barcelona last spring and thought I'd save a few bucks by using their free towel instead of packing my own. Turns out I accidentally stained it with some cheap drugstore sunscreen and they charged me $50 at checkout for a replacement. Now I always bring a dark colored microfiber towel from Decathlon for $7, has anyone else gotten nailed by hidden hostel fees?

A stained towel costing $50 sounds like their policy more than your mistake. You probably could have argued it down or pointed out the sunscreen was normal wear and tear. Save the stress and just buy the $7 towel next time, lesson learned cheap.

@fiona332 it's like they saw that sunscreen and smelled profit, right? Guess I'll stick to my $7 microfiber towel and avoid playing hostel roulette again.
