Found a hostel in Lisbon with a free breakfast that saved me $60 in 4 days
So I booked this place near Alfama for $22 a night and honestly picked it just because it was cheap. Turns out they put out a real breakfast every morning, not just toast and jam. Fresh rolls, cheese, ham, fruit, coffee, the whole thing. I ate there every day and skipped buying lunch out, which in Lisbon was running me like $12 to $15 each time. Four days of that and I basically paid for two extra nights of the room. The trick is checking the photos for an actual breakfast spread instead of a sad cereal box in the corner. Has anyone found other hostels in Europe where the free food is actually worth planning around?

$60 in 4 days sounds nice on paper but you said it yourself, you were buying lunch out every day at $12 to $15 which is the real problem here. That's $50 a day just on food if you add dinner, and the free rolls and ham didn't fix that, it just moved the cost around. I've stayed in plenty of hostels with "free breakfast" that turned out to be the same cold cuts and a coffee machine, and people act like they cracked a code when really they just ate bread for four days. The math only works if you actually would have paid for that lunch anyway, and half the fun of Lisbon is eating out. Not saying it's a bad find, but calling it a money saver is a stretch.
