Booked a hostel in Prague for $12 a night and realized I'd been overpaying for hotels the whole time
The hostel had free walking tours, a shared kitchen, and a rooftop view that my $80 hotel in Vienna couldn't touch. Has anyone else switched from hotels to hostels later in life and saved a ton?

Big time. I did the exact same thing last year. Booked a hostel in Lisbon for way less than a hotel in Barcelona and got this killer rooftop bar with locals hanging out. Made friends from three different countries in the first hour. Hotels just feel like a separate world now, you miss all that energy.

Nah, hard disagree honestly. Hotels give you actual privacy and quiet when you want it. Lisbon hostel rooftop sounds fun for like one night but sharing a room with strangers snoring and stealing your stuff? No thanks. Had a buddy do hostels in Prague and got bedbugs plus someone went through his bag while he slept. Hotels have locks, room service, and you can actually get a full night's sleep without hearing some rando's alarm at 6am. The "energy" argument falls flat when you're exhausted from dealing with hostel dorm life every single day.
