A guy at the bus station in Lima told me to ditch my guidebook
Last month I was waiting for a bus to Cusco and this older traveler saw me flipping through my Lonely Planet. He said 'that thing is 3 years old, half those hostels are closed or doubled their prices.' He was right. I ended up using Google Maps and asking locals for cheap eats, saved like $12 a day on food alone. The guidebook swore by tourist spots but the real spots off the main square were way cheaper. Now I just download offline maps and talk to people instead of buying books.

Man, who cares if a tuk tuk driver laughed at you? They laugh at everyone, it's just their thing.
