Update: a lady at Goodwill in Tampa said my $6 lamp 'looks like money' and now I get it
So I was digging through the lamp bin at the Goodwill on Gandy in Tampa about 3 weeks ago and this older lady next to me picked up a heavy brass lamp with a dingy shade, flipped it over, and said 'this one looks like money.' I almost walked past it, but she explained that the weight and the real metal base matter more than the shade. I paid $6 for it, grabbed a $4 linen shade at the same store, and put it on my nightstand. A friend came over for dinner and asked where I got my 'fancy hotel lamp,' which honestly cracked me up. It turns out the shade does 90% of the work, and nobody ever checks the base. I've now sold 2 more lamps like it on Marketplace for $40 each. What's the one small swap that made a cheap find look pricey for you?
