Overheard a server say tablecloths hide stains, now I skip them

A waitress at this diner in Portland told a coworker that white tablecloths just mask the mess underneath, so she never stresses about spills. Made me think about my own place, I stopped buying fancy covers and just iron my thrifted napkins for guests. Anyone else ditch the tablecloth trick for something cheaper?
