Got a free "marble" table on Craigslist, but a $12 bottle of nail polish saved it, should I have just painted the whole thing?
Picked up a coffee table in Jersey City two weekends ago that someone listed as solid marble, but when I got it home and wiped it down, a big chunk of the top flaked off and it was just painted particle board. I almost tossed it, but instead I used a $12 bottle of white nail polish to fill the chips and blend the edges, and now it looks pretty good in my living room. So my question is, was that a cheap fix or just a band-aid on junk? Should I have bought a $25 can of marble contact paper and wrapped the whole top instead, or is nail polish the smarter broke-to-bougie move?

Used to be all about hiding flaws with contact paper, I get it, cheap and covers everything. But then I realized that stuff peels at the edges after a few months and looks worse than the original chips. Nail polish on the spots that actually show is way smarter, it bonds to the surface and you only fix what needs fixing. Sounds like you read the room right instead of wrapping the whole thing in plastic.

Wait, someone actually listed painted particle board as solid marble? That is straight up lying to your face and hoping you would not notice until you got it home. I would be so mad I would want to drive it back and dump it on their lawn. I have seen people stretch the truth on Craigslist before but calling particle board marble is a whole new level of bold. You handled it way better than I would have, because I probably would have just left it on the curb. Sounds like the nail polish fix was the right call since it actually sticks and does not peel like that contact paper stuff.
