Saw a guy in Dallas repointing a 1920s chimney with a $9 trowel and it hit me
I was doing a small repair job in the Munger Place area of Dallas last Tuesday and the house next door had a guy up on a scaffold working on this big old red brick chimney. I stopped to watch because he was moving fast, just a small pointing trowel, a bucket of mortar, and an old chisel for raking out the joints. When he came down for a smoke break I asked him why no grinder and he said he's been doing it 31 years and the chisel lets him feel the brick so he doesn't blow out the corners. I've been using my grinder on every repoint job for years and now I'm wondering how much brick I've been chewing up that didn't need it. Any of you still rake by hand on old soft brick, or is that just asking for a long day?
