My leaning wall moment with mortar consistency
I always mixed mortar by eye, thinking it was good enough. After a wall I built started to tilt, I began using a slump test. Now every batch is perfect, and my structures are stable. Why did I not try this sooner?

My buddy wasted three extra bags of mix on his patio from inconsistent batches. The slump test saves material costs and cleanup time too.

Oh man, my garden wall started bowing for the same reason. I fixed it by mixing in a wheelbarrow and using the trowel to check the "peak" it holds. Once I got that right, the whole thing went up straight and has stayed put for two years now.
