My garage project proved you don't need fancy mixes for strong mortar
Everyone swears by the new pre-mixed mortars, but I stick with the basic sand and cement blend. Last summer, I repaired my own garage foundation using just that, and it's holding up better than my neighbor's with the expensive stuff. Those additives can weaken the bond over time, especially in wet weather. I've seen walls crack with pre-mix, but my old-school mix stays solid. It takes a bit more work to get the right consistency, but it's worth it. Give it a shot on a small job before you dismiss it. You'll save cash and get a better finish.

Can you blame someone for trusting what's worked for them? I've seen those cracks in pre-mix walls too, and it makes you wonder. Sticking to the basics has never let me down.

Wait, I get where you're coming from with your garage, but that's just one build. Honestly, the right pre-mix has polymers and stuff mixed in at the factory for a consistent blend that actually fights weather better. I've used a good one on a patio in super wet springs, and it hasn't budged or cracked at all. The bag stuff just can't match that controlled mix on bigger jobs.

Tbh that line about additives weakening the bond over time feels like a big claim. Honestly, a lot of pre-mixes are made for specific weather and do just fine. Your garage is one project in one place, but I've seen the fancy stuff hold up for years in way worse rain than we get.
