My custom trowel handle vs the store bought grip, 8 months later

I carved my own handle out of hickory for a 10 inch Marshalltown last spring, and after 8 months of daily laying it still feels like part of my hand. The store bought rubber grip I tried on my other trowel started slipping after 3 weeks and gave me a blister. Anyone else ever gone custom on their handles, or am I just being stubborn about it?
