Just realized my mortar mix was the problem on that retaining wall in Denver
Last Tuesday I was out on a job in Denver building a 40 foot retaining wall and the joints kept cracking no matter what I did. I figured it was the weather or the blocks being off, but after three tries I finally looked closer at my sand. The supplier gave me a load that had way too much clay in it, and that stuff kills the bond. I ended up dumping the whole mixer and switching to a washed sand I had to drive 30 minutes for. The wall laid up perfect after that. Has anyone else ever dealt with bad sand ruining a pour, and how do you spot it before you mix a full batch?

Did you check the sand before you dumped it, or was there a way to tell it was dirty just by looking at it? I’m curious if the clay was obvious or if you only caught it after the mix failed.
