Appreciation post: the mason at the Des Moines job who fixed my corner with one look
I was laying a block corner way out of plumb last Tuesday and this old guy walked by, glanced at it, and said "your level's fine, your mud's too wet," and darn if he wasn't right, so now I mix a half bucket stiffer before I start the leads, and I'm wondering if anyone else got a tip that simple that stuck with them.
Sounds like a nice moment but let's not act like the guy handed down the ten commandments of masonry. Wet mud is a basic fix anyone learns in their first month, and one old timer's glance isn't some magic wisdom. It's a solid tip, sure, but half the trade already knows it.
