Why nobody talks about bottom watering for succulents

I killed like 15 succulents over two years because I kept watering them from the top. The leaves would get wet and rot, or the soil would get compacted and the water just ran down the sides. Then I tried putting my pots in a tray of water for about 20 minutes once a week. Now my succulents actually grow roots deep into the pot and the leaves stay dry. I have not lost a single plant in 8 months since I switched. Has anyone else noticed their plants look way healthier with this method?

Ugh yeah top watering is a disaster for succulents. But how do you handle the salts and minerals building up in the soil over time? I don't feel like bottom watering flushes anything out.

@park.troy I actually do a quick top water every 4th or 5th watering just to flush stuff out, but I keep it really light - like a gentle drizzle, not a full soak. The bottom watering handles the main hydration.
