Visited the Denver Botanic Gardens yesterday and honestly, their new 'zero-water' native plant section looks kind of sad.

Nah, it's not sad. That's just how those plants look. They're built for dry ground, not a lush garden.

You're right about the plants being built for dry ground, @nathan289, but it's more about what we expect from them. We call a cactus sad because we're judging it by rose standards. Its whole beauty is in surviving where nothing else can. That toughness is the point, not some failure to be leafy. It's like being disappointed a desert isn't a rainforest.

My neighbor got mad at her aloe plant for not flowering. It's like buying a hammer and being upset it doesn't screw things in.
