Switched from misting to bottom watering for my indoor ferns about 3 months ago
I used to stand there with a spray bottle misting my Boston ferns every morning for like 2 years. Thought I was being careful. Then I noticed the leaves kept turning brown at the tips and the soil felt dry an inch down. A guy at the local nursery in Salem told me misting barely does anything for the roots and I was probably just wetting the leaves. Now I set them in a tray of water for 20 minutes once a week. No more crispy edges. Has anyone else had better luck with one method over the other for ferns?

@julia622 Exactly right. Misting mostly just wets the fronds and gives you false hope. Bottom watering lets the roots drink at their own pace. My Boston ferns finally stopped dropping leaves after I switched too, about 6 months ago now.

Nah I gotta disagree. Bottom watering is overrated for most ferns. I've been misting my Boston fern for over a year now and it's thriving - fronds are lush and green. The key is misting consistently, not just when you remember.

Oh man, I totally feel your pain with those crispy fern tips. It's so frustrating when you're trying your best and it still goes wrong. Glad the bottom watering is working out for you though, that's a game changer for sure!
