Spent 11 days fighting root rot on my pothos because I trusted the wrong soil
I repotted my golden pothos in March with a bag of miracle grow from the garage that had been sitting there since 2022, and within 2 weeks the leaves started going yellow and dropping. I kept watering it less, moved it to a shadier spot, bought a moisture meter, and even tried cinnamon on the stems because some guy on youtube swore by it. Turned out the soil had gone hydrophobic and was basically a brick holding water against the roots, so I had to dig it all out, rinse everything, cut off the mush, and start over with fresh perlite mix. Took 11 days to figure out what should have been obvious on day 2. Has anyone else had a bag of old potting soil turn on them like that?
Learned this the hard way with stuff way beyond plants honestly. Old bottles of glue that look fine till you use them, stale gas in the mower, that jar of paint from a year ago. We all hoard things in the garage thinking they stay good forever, but stuff breaks down even when it is just sitting there. Soil goes bad, glue dries up, gas turns to varnish. The lesson is the same every time, old is not the same as fine, and the fix is always to just start fresh instead of trying to save a few bucks.
