My uncle's greenhouse rant made me question my whole watering habit
Last Sunday in his greenhouse outside Dayton, my uncle said I water like someone paying rent on the soil. He showed me his moisture meter reading, 42 percent at root level, while mine was soaked at 78 and I had been pouring in a gallon a week for 3 years. It hit different because he's never critical, he just handed me a cheap meter from his bucket and said try this for two weeks. Has anyone else had a family member casually dismantle their routine like that?
That bit about "paying rent on the soil" got me good. My dad did something similar with our tomatoes a few years back. I was out there every Saturday dumping a whole watering can on each plant, and he just watched me one day and said "you're drowning them, they can't breathe." He dug his finger in and showed me the dirt was basically mud. I switched to checking the top inch before watering and cut way back. My yields actually went up that season. It's funny how we hold onto these habits for years and then one relative just clears it up in thirty seconds. I still think about that moment every time I see the moisture meter in my shed.
