My neighbor's 'just water it' method versus my overthinking killed my first fern
I got a Boston fern for my apartment last spring and treated it like a science project. I checked soil moisture with a meter every day, misted it twice, and used a special liquid fertilizer every two weeks. My neighbor, who has a whole balcony jungle, said she just gives hers a good soak once a week and ignores it. I thought she was being lazy. After about three months, my fern started dropping fronds like crazy, turning brown at the center. Hers was huge and green. I finally asked her to look at mine, and she pointed out the pot didn't drain well and I was keeping the roots too wet all the time. She was right. I was loving it to death with too much care. Has anyone else had a plant do better with simple neglect than with your full attention?

That "loving it to death" line really hits home. I used to believe more care always meant better results. Watching plants thrive on simple routines proved me wrong.

I hear you on the "loving it to death" thing, but is it really that deep? Sometimes a plant just dies because it's a Tuesday, not because you messed up.

Happens with my kids' projects all the time lol. I'll over-plan some craft and it flops, but they make something amazing with just paper and glue. Sometimes the extra stuff just gets in the way.
