My neighbor told me to water my new fern every single day
I followed her advice for a week and the leaves started turning yellow and dropping. Turns out it was way too much, and I should have been checking the soil moisture first. Has anyone else had a plant care tip backfire like that?

Honestly your neighbor was probably right though. Some plants really do need daily water, especially in dry weather or certain pots. You can't just blame her advice when every home environment is different. Maybe your soil drains too fast or you have it in direct sun all day. Sounds like you should have adjusted the routine instead of giving up on her tip completely. What kind of fern was it anyway?

Yeah gavinhunt saying "every home environment is different" is the key thing. I killed a spider plant the same way by following a strict weekly schedule. Now I just stick my finger in the dirt an inch deep, if it's dry then I water. Ferns especially hate wet feet, they want damp not soggy. Your neighbor meant well but you gotta learn to check the soil yourself.
