Killed my prized orchid last fall, now I water with a toothpick trick
Used to dump a cup of water every Sunday like clockwork until the roots rotted out on my phalaenopsis in October. Switched to poking a wooden toothpick an inch into the bark, if it comes out dry I water, if not I wait. Has anyone else found a low-tech moisture hack that beats fancy meters?

Boy, that toothpick trick sounds like a real life saver. A buddy of mine went through the same thing with his fiddle leaf fig, drowned the poor thing because he was sure more water meant more love. He ended up sticking a plain old chopstick in the pot and pulling it out every few days, same idea as yours, dry means drink. He swore by it for years and never bought one of those meters. Funny how the cheap stuff works better than the gadgets half the time.
